A few weekends ago I set out on a wedding dress shopping expedition with my mum. Even though I had been shopping with my sister and sister-in-law for their wedding dresses, I didn’t really know what to expect. That’s why I thought it might be a good idea to compile a list of my top tips to help you say “yes” to the dress (sorry, I couldn’t resist).
1. Wear clothes that are easy to get in and out of and be prepared to nude up.
You will not be alone in the change room so it is a good idea to wear something that is easy to get in and out of. Also, be aware that your sales assistant may see your boobs, it’s no big deal but it is just good to be prepared! Wear a strapless bra, skin coloured underwear and slip on shoes.
2. Write down your top five priorities when it comes to your dream dress and then throw them in the bin.
I went to my first appointment with a list of dress styles I definitely did not want and a bunch of Pinterest pictures of dresses that I loved. This was great in the first instance, as it helped the shop assistant narrow down some selections, but it is important to remember to keep an open mind. I went in with a pretty clear idea of what I wanted and walked out with a dress that was completely different to this and I couldn’t be happier!
3. Don’t be afraid to try on more dresses even when you think you have found ‘the one’.
I found ‘the one’ on my first visit to a bridal shop and I nearly bought it there and then on the spot. I was afraid trying on more dresses would just confuse me, but it was a huge investment and I wanted my girls to see it before I signed on the dotted line. I’m so glad I went and tried on more dresses, because wedding dress shopping is SO MUCH FUN! If you happen to fall in love with another dress it’s a nice problem to have, if not it will only reconfirm your first choice and you would have had a bunch of fun along the way.
4. Make sure your sales assistant sticks within your budget and don’t try anything on which exceeds it.
I forgot to do this at my first appointment and it is lucky that the dress I loved was within my budget, I could not imagine having to part ways with it due to price! At my next appointments I made sure I stated this at the beginning to avoid any nightmares. And definitely don’t do the “I’ll just try it on for style” thing, this can only end in tears.
5. Do your hair and makeup.
You are going to be looking at yourself in the mirror A LOT and you will be trying on some amazing dresses so it’s a good idea to make yourself presentable. It’s also a good idea to bring some hair ties in case you try on any dresses better suited to an up-do.
6. Bring someone who will give you an honest opinion but be prepared to ignore their feedback.
It’s great to have feedback, I found it really helpful as my bridesmaids are all married so they were able to give me some advice from their special days. But, if you love something go with your gut!
7. Imagine how you want to feel on the day, and pick the dress which fits in with that.
My sister gave me this advice and it was so helpful! Each dress has its own vibe so if you are struggling to choose one over another, picture yourself on the day and pick the dress which suits how you would like to feel.
